This guide when followed closely allows one to install Puppy Linux to a USB flash drive (pen drive, USB key, stick, cigar, etc.) from Microsoft Windows (tested, 2000, XP, Vista). This is useful when you want to run Linux on a computer, but have no CD writer (or blank CDs) or floppy drive.
Part 1: Prepare the Key
1. Open a command prompt window (start, run, type: cmd, hit enter).
2. Type at the prompt: FORMAT X: /fs:FAT [replace X with the letter of your flash drive]
Ovaj korak i nije obavezan ako zelite sacuvati postojece podatke na USB, sto je kod mene bio slucaj. Fajlsistem moze biti i FAT32.
3. Download the latest version of syslinux from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux
4. Extract the syslinux zip file to a new folder called syslinux on your desktop.
5. Open another command prompt (see step 1).
6. Type the following (hit enter after each):
cd Desktop
cd syslinux
cd win32
7. Type: syslinux.exe -ma x: [again, replace X with the letter of your flash drive]
Ja sam ovaj postupak radio iz Windows 7 i dobio sam poruku Access denied. Bitno je da pokrenete cmd.exe sa administratorskim privilegijama, a to cete uciniti ovako:
u Start meni upisati cmd i kad se pojavi medju rezultatima desni klik i izabrati Run as Administrator
Part 2: Copy Puppy to the Key
1. Download the latest Puppy Linux .iso file
2. Download and install 7-Zip (www.7-zip.org)
3. Using 7-Zip, extract the contents of the Puppy .iso to the root of the USB stick.
4. Rename isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg, rename isolinux.bin to syslinux.bin.
5. Open syslinux.cfg in WordPad (not Notepad).
6. Change the following line
append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd
into
append initrd=initrd.gz loglevel=3 pmedia=sda1
7. Save and close WordPad.
